Another 3 405 streetlight-related requests fixed over 14 days
28 November 2024
City energy teams fixed 3 405 streetlight-related requests between 6 November 2024 and 19 November 2024 as part of the streetlight focus initiative that was launched earlier in the year to enhance turnaround times. The area where the most requests were logged continue to be Area South.
‘Our teams continue to resolve thousands of streetlight-related service requests in a matter of a few days. The Energy Directorate will continue to implement operational interventions to ensure that our communities are brighter and safer. We need the help of our communities too though. I encourage residents to please report suspicious behaviour to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700. The South African Police Service remains the lead authority in crime prevention but the City will do all in its power to help keep the lights on.
‘Area South, which includes communities like Mitchells Plain, continue to be a hotspot for repeated theft and vandalism. We ask our residents to keep their eyes peeled typically for any unmarked vehicles parked by substations or suspicious-looking persons hanging around electrical infrastructure and to please alert the authorities. Most of our substations are in neighbourhoods close to homes and we thus ask our residents to be on the lookout. Only by working together can we hit back at the criminals targeting our infrastructure,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg.

The SAPS remains the lead authority in crime prevention.
*Note: the data looks at all streetlight-related service requests closed over a particular two-week period. Data is dynamic and new requests are constantly added to the already logged requests, as well as historic service requests. The data looks only at streetlight-related requests and does not include other energy service requests attended to over the period in review.
